Sometimes aircrew gunners have to make split-second decisions as to whether to fire or not to fire. (It’s important to not shoot at friendly aircraft.)

In World War II, one method used to help gunners speed up their aircraft identification skills was to flash photographs on a screen of the planes they had to recognize. One device used for this purpose was called a tachistoscope (ta kis’ tuh scope). Instructors could vary the duration of the images being flashed on the screen. At times the images would be flashed for just a few hundredths of a second. Blink and you miss it.

On fast internet connections most of the aircraft images will not be seen.
Fast graphics may not be the problem.

Funny things began to happen. When the gunners were in darkened rooms during this training, their eyes became dark adapted. It was found that many of them were holding on to the split-second images after the images were no longer on the screen. With dark adapted eyes, the images could be retained for a few seconds.

A study was set up to see just what could be done with these retained images. The images were positives instead of the more familiar negative images you get if you stare fixedly for a few seconds at a picture or scene, then look away. Some subjects got so good at the process that after seeing a very short duration image of a page in a book, they could then read the page, from somewhere inside their heads.

The above information was supplied to the writer by Mr. Ray Elkin West Lafayette, Indiana in 1962.

The fact that the subjects could acquire a readable image of a whole book page suggests that their peripheral vision happened to be, or became, more acute than that normally found in the general population. This form of retained visual images may not be accomplished with the same process as done by people who have what is called photographic memories. The writer didn’t thin to ask Mr. Elkin, but the idea of long term storage of the images did not come up.

The writer did not have access to a tachistoscope but decided to try an alternate technique for seeing the retained images. Dark adaptation seemed to be a prerequisite for the short term image retention. One way to dark adapt you eyes is to close them. Its not the same as being in a dark room but one can get a similar effect. Then comes the tachistoscope emulation. Rapidly open and close your eyes. This is not unlike exposing film in a camera. The first few hundred times you try this, you’ll probably get blurred images because your eyeballs aren’t yet convinced to hold still during the exposure. The images will be there but doubled, usually vertically. Keep trying! It’s also wise to make sure nobody is watching you.

After a month or so of your covert camera work you should find that your eyeballs begin to cooperate (the process might be called the steely eye)and images of big things with good contrast start to hang on. Big letters on billboards and soft drink machines make good targets.

With lots of work, assuming you haven’t been put away, you should find that text in books show up in blurry fashion, unreadable, but recognizable as fuzzy text. Large print documents may bring more rewarding results. As time goes on the acuity should improve to the point of readability.

It may be that that tachistoscope simulation near the top of this page, if viewed in a darkened environment, may provide a usable indicator of the process being discussed.

You can cheat, or take a short cut if you please, by using a camera strobe flash in a dark room. Hold the flash unit above or to the side of your head and aim it at an outstretched arm. You’ll see a bright image of your arm that does not immediately fade away. The image may last for two or three seconds. If you lower your arm while the image is still active you can have your own spooky show.

Can you really make your child a genius ?

Capitalising on the innate desire of every parent to give the best education possible to their children, many programs today claim to hold the master key to making Geniuses.

What makes a Genius or Who is a Genius ? Geniuses are fairly easy to spot, defining exactly what makes one person a genius is a little trickier.

Figuring out how that person became a genius is harder still.

and Da Vinci have amazed and baffled mankind. Are they simply blessed with

divine talents or do they possess some secret knowledge?

To gain an insight into the

working of a genius mind, a

group of specialists at a University in Japan invited the famous Japanese

International Chess player Mr Yoshiharu Habu to conduct an interesting

experiment.He is the undisputed champion of Shogi (a complex game which is the

Japanese equivalent of chess),and a widely acclaimed genius and a top celebrity

in Japan.

In this experiment, the

specialists used an electroencephalograph, a special kind of equipment that

monitors brainwave activity, which would indicate the part of the brain that is

used when performing certain tasks and can be observed on a computer monitor. Usually,

when playing the game of chess, a normal person would think with his left brain

using logic to plan his next few moves. But in the case of Mr Habu, the

specialists made an amazing discovery that showed other wise.

Mr Habu’s brainwave graph,

on the contrary, showed that he had used his right brain most of the time

before eventually switching to his left brain just before he made his move.

Upon further investigations using the electroencephalograph, the specialists

finally determined that Ms Habu had first used the right brain’s cognitive

images and spatial orientation to think and plan, and subsequently switched to

the left brain for logical linguistic confirmation before making his move on

the chess board.

Right Brain Holds the Key

This important discovery

led the specialists to carry out further studies and experimentation with a

wider selection of gifted individuals, and the results were astounding. It has

been shown that, as in Mr Habu’s case, the cognitive process for most gifted

persons is in fact right brain oriented. They tend to utilize the right

brain’s unique spatial awareness and mental images to think and create, while

the normal person uses the left brain to process information in a logical and

sequential manner.

Interestingly, Yoshiharu

Habu’s remark seemed to concur with the findings, as he said, ” Most chess

players’ vision seems to be darting around the chess board while studying the

various moves…. but for me, I would just take a glance focusing on the centre

of the board, and all the possible moves would just materialize in my head

where I plan my advances…. the accuracy is almost 100%.” Amazing indeed, these

geniuses simply have the ability to think out of the box by utilizing the vast

untapped potential of the right brain to combine with the skills of the left.

right brain activity was well-developed. The ancient people lacked telephones,

radar, cars and other forms of technology. Despite this limitation they could,

by the use of higher senses, bridge the limitations of distance. Modern man is

predominantly left brained; we use language and sequential learning to acquire

knowledge. This is a tedious lengthy process. Left-brain based education clouds

right-brain activity and the resultant student frustration contributes to

Doctors and scientists

became aware of the right brain through the emergence of people with ‘Savants’

syndrome. These people had tremendous memorization skills, generally termed

photographic memory. Their ability to calculate complex equations was almost

Far from being unique, we

What is Midbrain?

Midbrain (Mesencephalon) acts like a communication bridge connecting left brain and right brain. To balance the usage of left brain and right brain at will, midbrain must be activated and fully functional. Once Midbrain is activated, left brain and right brain can communicate easily and freely. Conscious mind vs. Subconscious mind

Some experts categorized left brain as conscious mind, and right brain as subconscious mind. Would you like to do an experiment to see how conscious mind and subconscious mind works? First, closed your eyes and imagine you are holding a fresh lemon that is cut into half in front your face. Now picture yourself squeezing the lemon so hard that the lemon juice sprinkle all over your face and dribbles into your mouth. Can you taste the lemon juice? Do you have more saliva in your mouth now? But where is the lemon?

In fact, our subconscious mind (right brain) cannot tell whether the image is from our eyes, from our imagination or from our memory. Whatever our conscious mind (left brain) decides to focus on, our subconscious mind reacts to it. Sometimes, this is how some people frighten themselves to death.

Do you realize once we decide where to go, our body reacts accordingly? We never have to put an effort to control which leg to step out first, and how high to raise it. All these actions are taken care by our subconscious mind.


Computer Calculation Speed

Wouldn’t it be nice when we are asked to do some mathematical calculations and our subconscious mind can automatically show us the answer? All we have to do then is just write or read from our mind.

In fact, we, human possess this potential ability. How long would it take you to answer this: 123,456,789 x 123,456,789? Some midbrain activated children can write out the answer instantaneously!


Photographic Memory

Our human brain possesses photographic memory potential.  Our right brain has the ability to remember all the images we have seen before. However, it depends on the left brain to retrieve the information from the right brain. With Midbrain activated, children can easily activate the photographic memory when applying Blind-Fold Reading Method to remember reading materials of their interest.


Ancient People vs. Modern People

Ancient People are right-brain dominated people. Even though they don’t use any language, they have the ability to detect and differentiate edible food vs. toxic food. Are parents allowed to accompany the children?

The children need to pay full attention and concentrate during the course. Therefore, no parents are allowed in the classroom in order to minimize the distraction to the children. However, parents are invited to attend the briefing at the end of the session on the 2nd day at 12pm.

What’s the role of parents after the course?

Parents are advised to guide and encourage their children to practice 5 to 10 minutes a day for at least 30 days. Guidance on how to practice with the children will be provided during the 2nd Day at 12pm. It’s just like riding a bicycle; the children’s skill is not stable yet after the course. Continuous practice for 30days will stabilize the skill, and once it’s stable, it will be for life just like riding a bicycle.
